in Google Alerts, Job Search

A customer just asked me how to monitor job pages across a large number of sites. The answer is based on a common pattern in URLs. Most companies post their open jobs in a page with job or jobs in the URL. If you set up a Google Alert for any page with these words in the URL, you will be notified as soon as a new job is posted. The most general search is for any job page on any website:
inurl:job OR inurl:jobs

If you want to narrow this down to a local area, just add the name of a city or state. In almost all cases, the job page includes the location name:
(inurl:job OR inurl:jobs) boston

If you want to track a single company, you can use its URL with the site:operator. Intel.com is a good example:
(inurl:job OR inurl:jobs) site:intel.com

You can also use this trick for a general type of site, like educational institutions, US government sites, or the US military:
(inurl:job OR inurl:jobs) site:edu
(inurl:job OR inurl:jobs) site:gov
(inurl:job OR inurl:jobs) site:mil

This even works with other countries, like Germany:
(inurl:job OR inurl:jobs) site:de

I’ll have to send this tip to my daughter, Jessica, who wants to move back to Berlin and work there for a couple of years:
(inurl:job OR inurl:jobs) berlin site:de

The most interesting part of this technique is that these searches are returning hundreds of millions of pages in Google. I just created a public Google Alerts account to collect the newest results from these searches. It is new, so there won’t be a lot of results at first, but it should get some good flow in a day or two.
