The best way to get Google News Alerts on a single country

When I check the search logs for this blog, I see a lot of search requests for Google News Alerts for a specific country, so here is my favorite way to set these up.

1. First you have to find a newspaper in that country. This can be done easily with a Google Web Search. For example, When I do a Google Web Search for newspapers in Singapore, I find that The Straits Times has an English language site:

2. Then you have to figure out how to tell Google News Alerts to only search that newspaper. This is done with source:[name of paper]. The trick is to use underscores instead of spaces. You should test this in Google News Search first, to see exactly how Google wants you to specify the paper’s name. Often the word “The” is left out. To test this try different variations in Google News Search. That way you get immediate feedback.

3. Now you can create a Google News Alert for specific keywords in that source. Again you should test this in Google News Search to make sure you understand how that paper describes the topics you are interested in:
