@Openzine on Twitter has a tweet that he repeats fairly regularly that parents should set up Google Alerts on their kids’ names. This always gets a good response, so I thought I’d try to add to this list with some other details about your kids’ lives you should track on Google Alerts.
- Their cell phone number.
- Their social security number.
- The name of their school.
- The names of their teachers.
- If they belong to a team, the names of their coaches.
- The names of their babysitters.
- Their doctor’s and dentist’s names.
- The name of their summer camp, and the names of the camp director and their counselors.
- The name of your family’s religious leader and Sunday school teachers.
- Let’s see how paranoid we can get. How about the names of their friends’ parents?
- If they are at college, use a Google News Alert with the domain name of their school. You don’t include the http://. For example, harvard.edu.
- Their college roomate’s name.
- If they are traveling to another country, you can set up an alert for US State Department advisories for the city or country they will be visiting: barcelona site:travel.state.gov
- The make and model of their car, and the word recall.
- The names of their medications and the word recall.
This whole exercise is a little paranoia inducing, right? Or maybe this is a great Web service just waiting to be created.

This is a great way for parents to monitor what their children are doing online. Better safe than sorry…right?!
