Google Alerts tricks for travel planning

My son has decided to take a semester off from school to travel the world, so I like to get alerts on his next destination. It gives me an excuse to bug him, and maybe steer him away from some of the hotter spots. Considering that he went to a kibbutz in Israel during the Gaza war, he isn’t likely to listen to me. At least I can know what he is going to run into.

1. Finding a hotel. Hotels.com publishes customer reviews on their site, so you can use the site: operator to get alerts on these:

Of course, my son isn’t going to stay in the type of places listed on hotels.com, so for his travel we use an alert for hostels on Lonelyplanet.com:
nepal hostel site:lonelyplanet.com

2. Creating a Flickr photo stream. Flickr is a great way to build a list of good tourist destinations in a new country, and to find people who are willing to discuss their travel experiences:
nepal site:flickr.com

3. Monitoring local news. Google News Alerts allow you to specify a single country or city for news items with the location: operator. Be sure to select News as the alert type:
location:nepal

4. Local weather reports. You can get a good idea of what to expect by tracking many of the weather sites. I find that a good cross-section of news results from asking for alerts on sites with weather in the URL. This is done with the inurl: operator:
nepal inurl:weather

5. State department advisories.
This is mostly for anxious parents whose kids think they are invulnerable. Yes, I’m talking about you, Zach:
